15 Cartoon Pet Portrait Myths (And the Truth Behind Them)

Think cartoon pet portraits are just silly doodles or only for kids? Think again! These fun, colourful portraits can capture everything that makes your dog uniquely them.

In this post, I’m busting 15 common cartoon pet portrait myths and sharing the truth behind each one. Whether you’ve ever wondered if cartoon portraits take just a few minutes to draw, or if they can even be meaningful keepsakes, keep reading to find out...

1. Myth: Cartoon pet portraits are just simple and quick doodles.

Reality: This is a common myth, which helps develop the patience of cartoon pet portrait artists! It’s true that some cartoons can be quick to draw, it depends on the cartoonists' style and application. The likelihood is that if they draw custom pet portraits, the cartoons are more detailed than ‘quick cartoons’ and it’s a carefully crafted piece of art rather than a scribble on the back of a napkin.

2. Myth: Cartoon pet portraits can’t capture a dog’s personality like realistic portraits can.

Reality: The reality is actually the reverse of this. Cartoons are more likely to capture a dogs personality than more realistic style portraits, because cartoonists have the freedom to anthropomorphise your pet’s personality.

3. Myth: Cartoon pet portraits are easier to create than realistic pet portraits.

Reality: If only! Simplifying a dog’s features while keeping it recognisable takes years of developing skill (and often multiple drafts!).

4. Myth: All cartoon pet portraits look the same.

Reality:Every artist has their own style, so this isn’t the case at all. In addition, even if the same cartoon artist drew the same dog again, your artwork will have it’s uniqueness. I’ve drawn over 40 portraits for one client’s dogs, and every one of them is unique.

5. Myth: Cartoon pet portraits are only for children.

Reality: Not at all. Adults love them too, especially when the art celebrates the personality of their dogs as well as the appearance. It’s definitely a myth that adults don’t enjoy fun stuff, especially when it comes to celebrating their dogs!

6. Myth: A cartoon pet portrait can’t be emotional or meaningful.

Reality: This myth is very far from the truth. One look at your cartoon dog can make you smile, laugh, or even tear up. I’ve had clients email me weeks after they have received their pet portrait, in tears of laughter because they have spotted a prop in their cartoon which is meaningful to a funny story they told me about their dog. Equally, I’ve had clients who have commissioned rainbow bridge portraits who have been in tears because they are overwhelmed at how I’ve captured their dog’s personality so fully.

7. Myth: Cartoon pet portraits aren’t “real” art like traditional portraits.

Reality: Cartoon portraits are proper artwork resulting from years of practice in developing skills and talent. It really helps to have some skills in traditional art to be able to simplify it accurately into a cartoon.

8. Myth: Cartoon pet portraits exaggerate pets too much to actually look like them.

Reality: The magic is in exaggerating just the right things so your dog is instantly recognisable, while feeling even more “them” than a photo.

9. Myth: You only need one perfect photo to commission a cartoon pet portrait.

Reality: Whilst traditional artists tend to mainly work from a single photo, it’s helpful for cartoonists to have as many reference photos as possible. When we anthropomorphise a dog, they may be shown in a position more common to humans, so getting an accurate photo could be tricky! Having knowledge of how your dog looks from all angles is essential to the artist to be able to imagine an accurate representation to draw from the final position.

10. Myth: Artists just trace photos when creating cartoon pet portraits.

Reality: Nope! Real artists interpret, redraw, and bring your dog to life with their own creative flair.

11. Myth: Cartoon pet portraits made digitally are made automatically using apps or filters.

Reality: If only! Whether drawn on paper or digitally, true custom portraits are hand-drawn with love, not by clicking a button.

12. Myth: Cartoon pet portraits are just novelty gifts.

Reality: Many families treasure them as keepsakes, and they often end up on walls, fridges, or Instagram feeds. One client of mine even had theirs made into a huge waterproof poster and hung it on their fence in their garden!

13. Myth: Cartoon pet portraits can’t be created for pets who have passed away.

Reality: Memorial portraits celebrate the pets who are gone but never forgotten. Cartoon portraits don’t mean that there is no emotion in them, and can be perfect for expressing a beautiful afterlife for your dog, as imagination plays such a big part in cartoons.

14. Myth: A cartoon pet portrait won’t really look like your dog.

Reality: A talented artist captures your dog’s signature features so everyone will know exactly who it is.

15. Myth: A cartoon pet portrait won’t feel as special as a traditional portrait.

Reality: These playful portraits are often just as cherished…sometimes even more, because they capture a dog’s personality in a way that more realistic art doesn’t cater for.

At the end of the day, cartoon pet portraits aren’t just funny pictures, they’re artwork that celebrate your dog’s personality, character traits, and quirks.

Whether you’re looking for a fun wall display, a memorable gift, or a heartwarming memorial, a cartoon pet portrait can capture your dog perfectly, in a way that’s as unique and special as they are.
