A cartoon portrait makes a wonderful gift for all kinds of special occasions, but which type is best for which occasion? That is something I explore in this blog post, but first, let's address a related question that often comes up ...
Is a caricature the same as a cartoon?
Whilst a caricature and a cartoon both use similar styles of drawing that use exaggeration, they are not the same.
A caricature is a specific portrait of a person or pet that exaggerates the strongest areas of detail on their faces.

A cartoon tends to be a broader field of art that doesn’t necessarily have to be based on a real person or pet.
However, 😊 …my dog cartoon portraits are of course always based on real dogs, and I use some elements of caricature in them. My style of cartoon is generally more detailed than, for example, gag cartoons, which is why I often refer to my art as ‘cartoon illustrations’ instead. I bring dog’s personalities out through the cartoon, rather than exaggerating particular features. The expressions that I draw on dogs faces are often anthropomorphised so they sometimes have human familiarities about them that we can readily connect to.

What is the best cartoon portrait option suited for romantic gift occasions?
The best type for romantic gifts tend to be the family cartoon portraits. When your loved one sees themself with you in the cartoon, (often along with the dog too of course), it makes a wonderful romantic gift as an exploration of the bond between you.
Best cartoon portrait option for a birthday?
A cartoon pet portrait is my best seller for a reason: a thorough character delve into their best friend, resulting in a vibrant, fun portrait bursting with personality.
There are other options though. They may have a wonderful relationship with their dog and you’d love to explore that, so a family portrait may feel the perfect option. Alternatively, they may have dogs but often talk about a dog from years ago who is still close to their hearts, in which case a rainbow bridge tribute could be the perfect choice, with a split scene showing their dogs past and present. Birthdays really are suitable for all types of cartoon portrait.
Best cartoon portrait for someone who is grieving their dog?
You may be expecting me to say without hesitation here, that the rainbow bridge tributes are the best option for someone grieving their dog. However, it isn’t always the case... There are no rules or time frames to grief, and while some clients have welcomed a tribute piece soon after losing their best friend, others may feel it is too soon, or that they would rather not think of them over rainbow bridge. Sometimes a better option can be a cartoon pet portrait so that they can be remembered as they were, maybe with other dogs that you have, rather than separately in a paradise scene. If you would like to gift someone a portrait when they have just lost their dog and if you aren’t sure which they prefer, you can opt instead for a custom gift voucher for them, which can be gift wrapped and even a custom card added, so that they can choose which they would like.
What are the price differences between types of cartoon portraits?
Cartoon pet portraits and Rainbow Bridge Tribute portraits are the same price. I will list prices below in GBP sterling, but please do contact me if you would like a quote in your currency.
Digital portrait: £120 +£25/per extra pet
A4 print pack: + £15
A3 print pack: + £30
Due to the extra hours of work that go into Family scenes, prices are a little higher for those.

How to present your cartoon as a gift
If you order a print with your cartoon, you will receive a high quality print on thick semi gloss paper in a suitably sized cardboard box, and inside it will be wrapped in acid free paw print tissue paper, sealed with paw print tape. Perfect for gifting as it is, or if you would like to make it really special, you can frame your cartoon once it has arrived. If you would like to mount it before framing, it’s wise to wait until you have received the cartoon so that you can match colours up to a bold area in the cartoon.
